How’s that for an acronym-filled blog post title? Here are a few quick tips for do-it-yourself search engine optimization that you can use to start improving your search engine ranking without having to fork over a bunch of cash (although, if you don’t want to deal with it yourself, we’re happy to take your cash).

- Page titles. This is the #1 overlooked and easiest to rectify search engine optimization tool. Google your own website by going to Google and typing site:*your url*. If all of the results have the same title, you lose. This is one of the most important ways that your site should be disseminating your keywords. But keep in mind that they page title keywords also should be relevant to the page content. Having a page title of “car repair” on a webpage focused on kittens… it just doesn’t make any sense. You’d like that would just be common sense, but you’d be surprised by what I’ve seen.

- Header tags. They look like this <h>etc etc… </h> These should also contain keywords relevant to the content that follows.

- Geography. For a quicker boost in traffic, refine your keyword strategy to a specific local market and include the city name(s) in your page titles and header tags.

- Specificity. Find a word to add to your keyword strategy that adds value to your brand, separates you from the pack, and lowers the competitiveness of the search term. For example, when JCM first started, we knew that “Michigan Web Design” was going to be a very competitive keyword, so instead of trying to slay the biggest dragon right away, we started out by adding the word “agency” to our keyword strategy. Not only did this help us see results sooner, but it helped to brand us as a more professional firm.

- Troll around a bit. Be active on forums and industry related blogs. Post relevant comments and suggestions frequently. Add your website URL to your signature on your forum posts. Seek out blogs with “do follow” links so that your link will be indexed.

- Be patient. Google doesn’t instantly award you credit for your SEO activity. And its algorithm gets smarter all the time. Above all, content is king. Be relevant. Be informative. Update content frequently. And don’t try to trick Google with sneaky stuff. They pretty much will always sniff out a cheater.
